While the matter is quite serious, there are aspects of the case that are quite comical. One of the pictures from the indictment shows boxes of documents piled high in one of Mar-a-Lago's tacky chandeliered bathrooms.
Since his actions are so hard to defend, some of the excuses Republicans are making for Trump are also comical. Kevin McCarthy delivered one of the most insane defenses on Monday afternoon.
A reporter asked the Speaker of the House, "Was that a good look for the former president to have boxes in a bathroom?" Referencing Joe Biden who self-reported having documents and immediately returned them, McCarthy replied, "I don’t know, is it a good picture to have boxes in a garage that opens up all the time? I don’t know, is it a good picture to have boxes in a garage that opens up all the time?"
McCarthy's excuse was mocked by Jamie Raskin who noted, "Well, it’s the first I’ve seen that particular defense, but is he suggesting that these boxes of classified documents got up and locked the door after people left the bathroom?” said Raskin with a chuckle. “I’m not quite sure I follow the logic of it."
"Look, the documents were unlawfully in Donald Trump’s possession, which was bad enough, which is a violation of the law, but even when given the opportunity to return them to the [National] Archives, to turn them back over to the government, Trump refused to do so, repeatedly. That’s what he’s being charged with — that obstruction of justice and playing that game of cat and mouse with the government."
