Matt Gaetz Fears Kevin McCarthy Could Face Criminal Referral Over 1/6; Wants Republicans Punished For Joining Committee

Representative Matt Gaetz is really concerned about the House Committee being formed to investigate the causes of the January 6th insurrection attempt. He’s issuing warnings and suggestions that seem intended to push GOP Leader Kevin McCarthy towards further action to disrupt the process.

After two of McCarthy’s picks for the committee were rejected for partisan antics that could derail the focus of the committee, he withdrew all of his nominees. Instead, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi began to make Republican nominations of her own, adding Adam Kinzinger (R-IL) to join her initial choice of Liz Cheney (R-WY). Now Matt Gaetz (R-FL) is frantically urging McCarthy to do something to punish these and any other Republicans Pelosi might nominate, and warning of dire consequences if he doesn’t.
Kevin McCarthy should be stronger in taking action against Adam Kinzinger and Liz Cheney.
If they’re going to take Nancy Pelosi appointments to committees, we should probably remove them as Republican representatives on the House Armed Services and Energy & Commerce committees. pic.twitter.com/A1nQVEUcf0

He says that Cheney and Kinzinger shouldn’t be allowed to have Republican positions on committees if they’re going to accept a nomination from Pelosi to a bipartisan committee, and that McCarthy should “be stronger in taking action” to send a message that these two do not represent the Republican party. As for McCarthy, he hints that if the GOP Leader doesn’t find a new way to derail the committee, he could face serious repercussions.
“I think the entire purpose of the January 6th committee is to create a series of criminal referrals to the Biden Justice Department, and I think that Kevin McCarthy is the lead target.”
McCarthy had previously indicated that he would strip committee assignments from any Republican who joined this committee, but then backpedaled.
