Mary Trump Is Not On The Unity Train

The president’s niece, Mary Trump, who released a book exposing some of his bad behavior behind the scenes, may appreciate that America has voted him out, but she’s not jumping on the unity train. While Joe Biden calls for Americans to come together, she speaks for a lot of us when she says she’s not ready to go full-force into the forgive-and-work-together path.

Joe Biden has campaigned on the promise that he’s running as a Democrat, but would be a president for all Americans. Now that he’s won, he’s speaking about unity, and healing the deep cuts of partisanship that have characterized the Trump presidency.

However, not everyone in America thinks that embracing extremists and Nazi apologists is the best way forwards. Mary Trump’s words on Twitter Tuesday morning, three weeks after election day, exemplified this. She said she doesn’t want to bridge a divide and make peace with people who have supported atrocities — she wants to see them charged.

Though Donald Trump lost his bid for re-election, many of his allies in Congress, who supported and rallied with him on his most harmful policies and ideologies, kept their seats. Joe Biden, according to NBC, says that he won’t be a part of investigations and prosecutions of Trump and others complicit in his administration, but that doesn’t mean they won’t go forward. He says he’ll leave all of that to an independent Justice Department team, and his own job will be to lead the country and try to help heal.
