Man Who Shot Wisconsin Judge Was Also Targeting McConnell and Two Governors

A man accused of fatally shooting a retired Wisconsin judge kept a “hit list” which included Republican Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell and two Governors as his next targets. Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer and Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers were confirmed by Reuters as the two named on the Wisconsin gunman’s list.

Retired judge John Roemer was found dead on Friday in his home after the local sheriff’s office received a call about “an armed person and two shots fired in a Township of New Lisbon residence,” the Wisconsin Department of Justice said in a statement. The department called the retired judge’s killing a “targeted” attack.

The suspect, Douglas Uhde, was found in the basement of Judge Roemer’s home with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was taken to the hospital and a firearm was recovered at the scene.

A spokesman for Governor Whitmer’s office also confirmed she was on the list, but told Reuters, “While the news reports are deeply troubling, we will not comment further on an ongoing criminal investigation.”

“This … does appear to be a targeted act and the individual who is a suspect appears to have had other targets as well,” Wisconsin Attorney General Josh Kaul said at a Friday news conference. “It appears to be related to the judicial system.”

Gun safety advocates have been pushing the U.S. government to take stronger measures to curb gun violence after the country’s recent spate of mass shootings, while Republicans continue to ignore calls for stricter regulations and have suggested increasing security at schools and arming teachers instead.
