Man Wears KKK Hood to San Diego Supermarket

A local San Diego man reminded Americans that White Supremacy is alive and well by wearing a homemade KKK hood as a facemask. The incident occurred over the weekend in the town of Santee, San Diego. California officials condemned the man when the images surfaced on social media. The man wore the racist symbol one day after San Diego mandated that its citizens wear masks out in public if they are going to come closer than six feet to another person.

Tammy Gillies, who is the Regional Director of the Anti-Defamation League of San Diego, tweeted a response to the incident. “Don’t know which angers me more—the person wearing this or the fact that no one in management @Vons Santee did anything about it.” She added,  “@ADL_SD⁩ would be happy to educate your team. San Diego is #NoPlaceForHate.” She also shared the images.

A county supervisor, Dianne Jacob, also responded. “ The images I’ve seen are abhorrent. This blatant racism has no place in Santee or any other part of San Diego County. It is not who we are. It is not what we stand for and can’t be tolerated.

The man was confronted by others in Vons but refused to take off the hateful hood. He did not remove it until he went to checkout. The area has a history of racist incidents and is no stranger to white supremacy. Therefore, the man’s actions are probably not surprising to minority residents. The incident is a stark reminder that the pandemic has not stopped hating. This and many other issues will be waiting on us when the pandemic is over.
