Make America Grate Again — Artist Is Building Wall Of Cheese On Southern Border

An artist is drawing attention as he builds a wall on the border between the United States and Mexico. That’s because he’s building it out of cheese. Cosimo Cavallaro says that a wall built of cheese, unlike one made of cement and razor wire, is a wall he “can live with,” because, being perishable, “it won’t last.”

He’s crowdfunding the project, which uses blocks of expired hard cheese, and he hopes for it to stretch 1,000 feet upon completion. At the last update of the Cheese Wall website, he was funded for only 25 feet,  or 200 blocks at a cost of $100 each. He’s also selling cheese-themed merchandise to help cover costs and support further art and activism.

In answer to those who say the project is a waste of money, the artist told the L.A. Times that the same logic should be applied to Trump’s wall.

To spend all this money to keep dividing the countries, I think is a waste. You see the waste in my wall, but you can’t see the waste in [Trump’s] $10-billion wall, which in time will be removed?

Cosimo explains on his Cheese Wall site that the idea is to make people look at the border wall in a different way. He says that people on both sides of the border are the same and that everyone has been made to feel like an outsider at some point.

With his cheese wall, Cosimo hopes to promote a dialogue that helps people see that we’re all the same.

It’s not Cavallaro’s first time working with cheese. He frequently uses food as a medium, and previous projects include sculpted cheese boots and jacket, and a cheese chair. Nor is it his first time being controversial — in 2007, according to NBC, an Easter exhibit of a chocolate sculpted Jesus, nude, anatomically correct, and in a crucifixion pose, was canceled after complaints from the public.
