Adam Schiff (D-CA) is the Chair of the House Intelligence Committee and Devin Nunes (R-CA) serves as the committee’s Ranking Member. Thanks to their positions, each congressman was able to make an opening statement. During that allotted time, the two men had wildly divergent takes on the matter at hand.

Nunes spent his time by trying to tie the whistleblower’s complaint the to the Steele Dossier before accusing Democrats of conspiring with Ukraine. “Democrats on this very committee negotiated with people who they thought were Ukrainians in order to obtain nude pictures of Trump,” said the congressman. “People can reasonably ask why the Democrats are so determined to impeach this president when in just a year, they will have a chance.”

Schiff used his time in a very different manner. He began, “The presidential oath of office requires the president of the United States to do two things. Faithfully execute his or her office, and protect and defend the Constitution.”

The chair of the committee continued, “Yesterday, we were presented with the most graphic evidence yet that the president of the United States has betrayed his oath of office. Betrayed his oath to defend our national security, and betraying his oath to defend our constitution.”
