Lindsey Graham was one of the loudest voices during the Clinton Impeachment hearings of the late 1990’s. The South Carolina senator also repeatedly slammed Donald Trump during the Republican nomination process, saying nominating the business man would destroy the party.
Years later, Graham has seemingly changed his mind both on what necessitates impeachment and his opinion on Trump. During a talk with reporters today, the senator said it would be “insane” to impeach a President over a phone call.
Graham first claimed that Democrats should be as subject to investigation as Republicans are. He told the assembled press, “From my point of view to impeach any president over a phone call like this would be insane. Joe Biden is a very good friend, but we can’t have a country where one side looks at and the other one does not.”
The senator then said that Ukraine didn’t seem to have a problem with Trump’s call. He continued, “The Ukrainian president did not feel threatened. He was the target of the phone call. He felt fine with what happened. I have read it just like you have. You can make your own decision, but from a quid pro quo aspect of the phone call, there’s nothing there suggesting that the prosecutor may have been fired because of a conflict of interest.”
In his strident defense of the President, Graham continued to argue that Trump had done nothing wrong. He told the members of the press that it is very appropriate for the President to ask the Ukraine to investigate Biden.
