Lincoln Project Gut Punches Greg Abbott Over COVID Failures

The Lincoln Project released a new ad on Friday blasting Republican Governor Greg Abbott of Texas for allowing COVID-19 to kill tens of thousands of his state’s residents.

Public health has not been a priority for Abbott, who last month signed into law one of the strictest abortion bans in the entire country. Abbott has been a fierce opponent of mask and vaccine mandates and has refused to enact restrictions on crowd sizes or promote social distancing measures, leading to a prolonged and much deadlier outbreak of the coronavirus in the Lone Star State.

Abbott is also a staunch supporter of former President Donald Trump’s now-defunct dream of erecting a barrier along the United States’s southern border with Mexico.

“Texas is now one of the leading states in COVID deaths. More than 3,380,000 Texans have been diagnosed with COVID” since the pandemic began in early 2020, the spot begins, noting that “more than 60,475 Texans are dead” and that the “over 60,000 Texans buried” would fill “a cemetery that would stretch from Austin to San Antonio.”

Continuing on, the 60-second ad states that “over 3.6 million feet of casket lumber” has been used for the scores of burials, which is “enough to build a wall 85 miles long. If Governor Abbott wants to build a new wall, tell him to stop building this one,” it added using text that was superimposed over a mock border wall made of standing coffins.

“Abbott’s Wall,” the clip concludes. “Paid for with 60,475+ Texans Lives.”

The Lincoln Project posted the ad to Twitter along with a brief caption that reads, “Greg Abbott is building a wall. It’s not the one he promised.”
