Legal Expert Elie Honig on Trump Trial: Prosecutors Yearn for Evidence Like This
Over the last two days, Democratic house managers have delivered a blistering case against Donald Trump. And the case seems to be landing with at least some Republican jurors. While it will be impossible to move people like Lindsey Graham or Josh Hawley, lawmakers like John Thune, Lisa Murkowski and Bill Cassidy have been complimentary of the Democratic case.
To outside legal observers, the case is even strong. While discussing a tweet sent out by Trump during the insurrection, Elie Honig remarked, “prosecutors yearn for evidence like this.”
The CNN legal expert was referring to a tweet sent by the ex-president at 6 PM on January 6th. The message read, “These are the things and events that happen when a sacred landslide election victory is so unceremoniously & viciously stripped away from great patriots who have been badly & unfairly treated for so long. Go home with love & in peace. Remember this day forever!”
In an opinion piece, Honig wrote, “Ask yourself: Are those the words of a person who was genuinely ‘horrified’ by what he saw, to quote Trump’s attorneys? To the contrary, in my view, the tweet establishes beyond any real doubt that Trump was pleased at what his supporters had done. He called them ‘great patriots,’ and urged them to ‘(r)emember this day forever!’ Those are unequivocal words of empathy with the mob — even exultation — not regret.”
The legal expert continued, “Prosecutors yearn for evidence like this. It is simply devastating and almost certainly would ensure a conviction if this case were a criminal trial.”
