Larry Kudlow’s CPAC 2020 Speech Comes Back to Haunt Him

At the annual Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) conference in 2020, Larry Kudlow, a Fox News propagandist and former chief economic adviser to ex-President Donald Trump, insisted that COVID-19 was nowhere near as big a threat to the American way of life as Socialism, the right-wing’s default boogeyman.

Now, one-year into what will eventually be tolled as the worst pandemic in United States history, with more than half a million people dead and an economy that is barely clinging to life, Kudlow’s words serve as a horrendous reminder that no one within Trump’s orbit had the truth or the best interests of the American people at heart.

“Right now, everyone’s focused on the coronavirus, and I just wanna say I was on the air this morning suggesting that the world was not coming to an end,” said Kudlow, to which the audience responded with laughter, “and suggesting that President Trump has made it very clear that the highest priority we have is the health and safety of the American people, and he has taken unprecedented and historical steps to contain the virus, protect Americans, to make sure that this will turn out to be a low-risk proposition, not a high-risk proposition.”

We now know that Trump lied his way through the crisis and bungled numerous recovery efforts because the only thing on his mind was his own political survival.

The ensuing disaster is what happens when scientists are sidelined.

“It will not sink the American economy,” Kudlow assured his jubilant audience. “What is or could sink the American economy is the Socialism coming from our friends on the other side of the aisle. That’s the biggest fear that I have today. And I spoke a year ago at this conference about dealing with Socialism, and listen, [CPAC Chairman] Matt [Schlapp], I am perfectly happy to have a Socialist candidate and we will have it out. President Trump is more than prepared to show the world why what he called at Davos, Switzerland, ‘the American model of free enterprise,’ will whip Socialism every time, hands down.”

Cue the thunderous applause.
