Former Trump attorney and self-proclaimed “Kraken releaser” Sidney Powell has a new game in town, according to Dominion Voting Systems. The company, which has sued Powell over her baseless claims of a rigged presidential election says the true beneficiary of a non-profit social welfare organization she created is Powell herself.
Powell, who filed dozens of lawsuits in an effort to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election, set up the supposed non-profit organization Defending the Republic (DTR) and told prospective donors that DTR was a legal defense fund intended to protect the integrity of U.S. elections.
But Dominion Voting Systems, in a May 5 court filing, claims that Powell actually has been raiding DTR’s bank account to pay for her own legal expenses. “Now, Powell seeks to abuse the corporate forms she created for her law firm and fundraising website to hide funds that she raised through her defamatory campaign, shielding those funds from the very company that was harmed by the defamatory campaign,” Dominion lawyers wrote. DTR not withstanding, Powell may rake in a few bucks for her legal defense from a Memorial Day weekend conference in Dallas called the “For God & Country Patriot Roundup.” The event is being organized by QAnon conspiracy theory promoter John Sabal, also known as “QAnon John” to followers.
Speakers at the event will include a who’s-who of conspiracy theorist royalty: Powell, former Gen. Michael Flynn, South Carolina attorney Lin Wood and George Papadopolous, former aide to twice-impeached former president Donald Trump. Tickets for the Dallas conference cost $500 for general admission and $1,000 for VIP passes. The event website doesn’t name other beneficiaries or specify how much money goes to Powell’s DTR non-profit.
