“Karen” Lies To Police, Says African American Man Threatened Her
Amy Cooper is facing serious backlash after a video surfaced of her making false claims to police against an African American man. The incident took place on Memorial Day inside Central Park in New York. The confrontation started when Cooper took her dog, Henry, off his leash. She was then asked to place her dog back on his leash by Christian Cooper. Amy Cooper seemed to be appalled by Mr. Cooper’s request.
Amy Cooper responded with anger towards Mr. Cooper, who is black, and Amy threatened to call the police as Christian Cooper recorded the encounter. Then, Amy Cooper said what many have construed to be a death threat. She said, “I’m going to tell them there’s an African American man threatening my life.”
Amy Cooper can be seen in the one minute clip pointing her finger in the face of Christian Cooper before backing up and getting on her phone to 911. What was so telling for many was how Amy Cooper made sure to make clear that Christian Cooper was a black man. Her claim that he threatened her is proven false by the video.
The video out of Central Park is racism, plain and simple.
She called the police BECAUSE he was a Black man. Even though she was the one breaking the rules. She decided he was the criminal and we know why.
This kind of hatred has no place in our city. https://t.co/6PP7jIwL1g

The video has gone viral and has sparked outrage. Many Americans have called Amy Cooper a racist and a Karen. Even New York Mayor Bill Deblasio made a statement on Twitter.
His Tweet reads, “The video out of Central Park is racism, plain and simple. She called the police BECAUSE he was a Black man. Even though she was the one breaking the rules. She decided he was the criminal and we know why.”
Amy Cooper has since apologized. She released a statement saying, “I sincerely and humbly apologize to everyone, especially to that man, his family. It was unacceptable and I humbly and fully apologize to everyone who’s seen that video, everyone that’s been offended … everyone who thinks of me in lower light and I understand why they do.
When I think about the police, I’m such a blessed person. I’ve come to realize especially today that I think of [the police] as a protection agency, and unfortunately, this has caused me to realize that there are so many people in this country that don’t have that luxury.” Amy has been put on administrative leave from her place of work pending further review. Franklin Templeton also put out a statement on Twitter.

For many Black Americans instances like these are commonplace in a country where racial tensions have always been high.
