Judge Threatens to Hold Jeff Sessions in Contempt, Tells DOJ to ‘Turn the plane around’ After Mother is Deported
The judiciary branch of the US government has been one of the only things able to stop some of the Trump administration’s perceived reckless behavior thus far, and today that has never been more true.
This morning, in a move which shows the sheer anger and disgust of Federal Judge Emmet G. Sullivan, he threatened to hold Attorney General Jeff Sessions in contempt of court after the US Department of Justice appears to have disobeyed his previous orders.
It all stems back to a mother, known in court filings as only ‘Carmen’. This woman and her child had fled their home country, seeking asylum from a violent and abusive husband/father. The American Civil Liberties Union claimed that ‘Carmen’ had been put on a plane and sent home, meaning that she was deported in the midst of a court hearing to appeal her deportation orders.
“This is pretty outrageous,” said U.S. District Court Judge Emmet G. Sullivan. “That someone seeking justice in U.S. court is spirited away while her attorneys are arguing for justice for her? I’m not happy about this at all. This is not acceptable.”
In a shocking move, Judge Sullivan then ordered that the government “turn the plane around,” and bring both Carmen and her child back to the United States immediately.
The attorney for the US DOJ, Erez Reuveni, could not confirm where Carmen and her daughter actually were at the time. The mother and daughter were ordered to be deported by the DOJ after Attorney General Jeff Sessions decided to no longer include domestic and gang violence as reasons for people to qualify for asylum in the United States.
