Judge Orders Powell, Michigan Attorneys Who Pushed Trump’s “Big Lie” To Court For Sanctions Hearing
A federal judge in Michigan has ordered Kraken-releasing lawyer Sidney Powell and other attorneys who tried to get Michigan’s 2020 presidential election results overturned to appear before her on July 6 for a sanctions hearing. Knowingly filing a fraudulent lawsuit is grounds for disbarment, which is one of the potential penalties facing Powell and Michigan attorneys Greg Rohl, Scott Hagerstrom and Stefanie Junttila.
Judge Linda Parker issued her summons in response to a request from Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel, who has blasted the lawyers for filing and pursuing the King vs. Whitmer case on behalf of Michigan Republicans who sought to overturn the state’s election results. Those claims were quickly discredited and certified results definitively showed that Joe Biden defeated Donald Trump to win the state’s electoral votes.
Powell has been sued by Dominion Voting Systems for $1.3 billion for defamation. She made outrageous claims that the company’s voting machines improperly switched votes from Trump to Biden. In her defense, Powell claimed in March that no one should have taken her seriously when she repeatedly made those statements at various public events and during cable news appearances. She repeated that defense over the Memorial Day weekend at a QAnon conspiracy theorist rally in Texas.
Her position is that “no reasonable person would conclude that the statements were truly statements of fact.” Michigan’s attorney general cited that stunning admission in requesting sanctions, noting that the attorneys made statements “they knew to be misleading” to advance conspiracy theories to “dismantle our system of democracy.
