Judge Addresses Capitol Rioters’ “Dangerous, Violent Ideology”

A judge handling a bail hearing Thursday for one man charged in the attack on the U.S. Capitol addressed broadly the whole movement, calling it out as dangerous and violent.

Colin Kalmbacher of Law and Crime shared information from Thursday morning from the bail hearing of William McCall Calhoun Jr., who is facing three charges resulting from allegedly entering the Capitol building and specifically breaching House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s office and damaging property.

While Calhoun was ultimately denied bail, and while bail and trial hearings, as well as any sentencing hearings, will happen separately on a case-by-case basis for the more than 100 people already arrested in the Capitol breach, more than one thing that the judge is quoted as saying appears to address the entire movement. He addresses Calhoun’s ‘deep state’ beliefs, and says that a person who doesn’t respect the Capitol building isn’t going to respect any orders given by a judge for conduct during bail — but this especially stands out.

This, too:

Ultimately, the judge here is calling out not only the individual but the entire movement as “dangerous and violent,” and also addressing that the members are “poisoned,” “corrupted or seduced” by it — that this is much bigger than any one man’s crimes.

According to the BBC there have been over 100 arrests and more than 200 cases opened with regard to the Capitol breach, and the FBI continues to seek any information on those who participated in the attack, or the planning thereof. Law enforcement is using social media to trace information leading up to the event.
