When President Trump tweets, you don’t always know if he is serious or if he’s half-heartedly joking. This has led many political pundits and commentators to question his state of mind when he took to Twitter last night to tweet the following message to Iranian President Hassan Rouhani:
“NEVER, EVER THREATEN THE UNITED STATES AGAIN OR YOU WILL SUFFER CONSEQUENCES THE LIKES OF WHICH FEW THROUGHOUT HISTORY HAVE EVER SUFFERED BEFORE. WE ARE NO LONGER A COUNTRY THAT WILL STAND FOR YOUR DEMENTED WORDS OF VIOLENCE & DEATH. BE CAUTIOUS!”
Was Trump serious, or was it simply an empty threat meant to make himself look strong after being attacked by the media for being cowardly in the way he handled the summit with Vladimir Putin?
This morning, however, we seem to have an answer, as National Security Advisor of the United States John Bolton released a statement that read as follows:
“I spoke to the President over the last several days, and President Trump told me that if Iran does anything at all to the negative, they will pay a price like few countries have ever paid before.”
While this could also be a bluff on behalf of the White House, in an attempt to convince Trump’s base that he is, in fact, willing to stand up against our adversaries after he seemingly refused to do so with Russia last week, the fact that Bolton released this statement seems to give it a little more credibility.
It will be interesting to see how Iran and Hassan Rouhani react to these statements by Trump and Bolton.
