Despite a friendship that goes back years, Joe Manchin has not made life easy on Joe Biden. The West Virginia senator has been reticent to pass Biden’s infrastructure or voting rights bills.
When the opportunity came for the President to nominate a new Supreme Court Justice, some worried that Manchin could tank that too. But while talking with reporters today, Manchin said he is eager to get a new judge on the bench.
“I think that basically,” Manchin said, “especially if it’s somebody who’s already been vetted — that we put on one of the benches before, circuit or district — that’ll make it go even quicker. But, you know, we just we have to fill the seat … and I’m anxious to get that done.”
The West Virginia senator was also asked about Republican concern that Biden has zeroed in on African-American female candidates. “This time has come,” he countered.”And I think it’s great to have this many qualified — I mean, extremely qualified people that can serve and I think serve justice. [It is] basically just a balance that needs to be done to represent who we are as a nation.”
