Joe Biden Calls for a National Mask Mandate as Coronavirus Cases Reach New Peaks
Democratic presidential nomimee Joe Biden called for a national mask mandate as the United States reported its highest daily case count since the COVID-19 pandemic began.
More than 83,000 new cases of COVID-19 were reported on Friday, indicating, as experts have warned, that the US is likely experiencing a third wave of infections, which has the potential to be exacerbated as people hunker down in close-quarters for the winter.
“The pandemic doesn’t play favorites, nor will I. No red states, no blue states, just the United States – united in our response, united in our purpose to stop the spread of COVID-19 and beat this virus,” Biden said Friday in a speech in Wilmington, Delaware.
“First, I’ll go to every governor and urge them to mandate mask wearing in their states, and if they refuse, I’ll go to the mayors and county executives and get local mask requirements in place nationwide,” Biden said.
“As president, I’ll mandate mask wearing in all federal buildings and all interstate transportation, because masks save lives, period,” he said. “Wearing a mask is not a political statement. It’s a scientific imperative.”

President Donald Trump, meanwhile, continues to lie about the dangers of the coronavirus, claiming during the final presidential debate Thursday night declared that the country is “rounding the corner” and that the virus is under control.
He also still, incorrectly, blames China.
“I take full responsibility,” Trump said. “It’s not my fault that it came here. It’s China’s fault.”
Trump insisted that the 225,000 people who have already lost their lives are collateral damage and that the country should just suck it up.
“We’re learning to live with it,” Mr Trump said. “We have no choice.”
Eleven days until the election.
