Jerry Falwell Jr. Excommunicated From Liberty University Over Salacious Photo
Jerry Falwell Jr.’s time as president and chancellor of Liberty University came to an abrupt end on Friday after a picture emerged of Falwell on a yacht with a woman who is not his wife.
A proverbial scandal magnet, Falwell and his companion, whom he has claimed to be his wife’s assistant, were photographed with their shirts rolled up and their pants unzipped.

In a statement, the university’s board of directors gave Falwell the boot:
“The Executive Committee of Liberty University’s Board of Trustees, acting on behalf of the full board, met today and requested Jerry Falwell, Jr. take an indefinite leave of absence from his roles as President and Chancellor of Liberty University, to which he has agreed, effective immediately.”
Falwell took over the role of president in 2007 following the death of his father, Jerry Falwell Sr., who founded numerous ultra-conservative evangelical organizations: the Thomas Road Baptist Megachurch in Lynchburg, Virginia, Liberty Christian Academy (formerly the Lynchburg Christian Academy), Liberty University, and the Moral Majority.
The Falwells are perhaps best known for their extreme right-wing crusades against social equality and abortion. More recently, Falwell kept Liberty University open as the coronavirus pandemic began sweeping through the United States. Falwell defended his decision by falsely claiming that keeping students packed in dorms and lecture halls was the safest course of action.
“I think we, in a way, are protecting the students by having them on campus together,” Falwell said, adding that young people “don’t have conditions that put them at risk”.
