Former Republican Rep. Jason Chaffetz appeared on Fox News’ Hannity on Friday night where he decided to use the death of a 7-year-old migrant girl as a warning for asylum seekers. During the disturbing interview, Chaffetz said the message was that a trip to the U.S. “will kill you.”
The Department of Homeland Security is investigating the little girl’s death but Chaffetz has already made up his mind.
“The sad reality is we have a 7-year-old girl who has died, and she should have never, ever made that journey,” Chaffetz told Sean Hannity. “And that should be the message, don’t make this journey, it will kill you, and that should be the message.”
“Frankly I think the message should be ‘no, stay there, stay in your own country of origin. Go to the embassy. Apply for the 90 different visas,” Chaffetz added.
Seven-year-old Jakelin Caal Maquin died from dehydration and shock while in U.S. custody. She was taken into custody by New Mexico Border Patrol officers after crossing into the United States with her father and other immigrants.
Despite having not eaten in several days, the young girl was detained for at least eight hours without food or water. Maquin died less than 24 hours after she began to have seizures.
Here’s Chaffetz’s full interview with Hannity.
