Ivanka Trump Faces Twitter Backlash After Criticizing Green New Deal

Ivanka Trump has come under fire over comments she made in a Fox News interview broadcast on Monday night. The President’s eldest daughter criticized Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’ Green New Deal and its federal job guarantee.

She said, “I don’t think most American’s in their heart want to be given something.”

Part of the Green New Deal proposal includes the adoption of a universal basic income to ensure everyone receives the necessary resources to guarantee their survival. Ivanka Trump dismissed the idea. “People want to work for what they get. So, I think that this idea of a guaranteed minimum is not something most people want.”

The heiress’s comments prompted a jarring response from Twitter as many were quick to expose the hypocrisy in her statement.

Georgetown professor Don Moynihan pointed out, “when Ivanka gets a meeting with a world leader, does she tell herself that it’s because she earned it?”. He asked, “is this what she thinks meritocracy is?”

Others, like Tim O’Brien, the Executive Editor of Bloomberg’s Opinion section, highlighted the vast sums of income the heiress receives for doing nothing.

A recurring theme among the responses was that Ivanka Trump was hopelessly out of her league and ill-equipped to criticize a deal which could ease the financial stresses the working population faces. Amanda Carpenter of CNN opined, “probably the worst person to deliver this message.” Another simply said, “oh Ivanka, you are way out of your league if you think you can win this debate with AOC.”

The consensus was that Ivanka had no place speaking about the desire of others to work hard when she has been afforded a life of luxury without putting in the hard work. One Twitter user urged Ivanka to “sit this one out.”
