Iowa Republican Joni Ernst Down 3 to Theresa Greenfield in New Poll

The Republicans currently have a majority in the senate with 53 members. This majority has helped the party push through the Supreme Court nominations of Brett Kavanaugh and Neil Gorsuch. It has also helped them acquit Donald Trump after the House impeached him.

That lead in the Senate, however, could be in major trouble in 2020. Incumbents Susan Collins, Cory Gardner, Thom Tillis, Martha McSally and Steve Daines all have tough races. And according to a new poll, Iowa senator Joni Ernst could be in trouble as well.

The poll was conducted by Ann Selzer who 538.com called the best pollster in America back in 2016.

Selzer had the Democratic challenger, Theresa Greenfield, leading Ernst by a margin of 46%-43%. There was a 3.8% margin of error.

The pollster remarked, “This is definitely a competitive race. Symbolically, that’s certainly meaningful, even if Theresa Greenfield’s lead is not commanding.” Selzer also noted that there are other “warning signs” for Ernst within the findings.

David Kochel, who has worked on Ernst’s campaigns was not concerned by the numbers. He tweeted, “Coming off the primary victory bounce, this will be Theresa Greenfield’s best poll. All downhill from here as voters learn about her business record and phony biography.”

Greenfield, on the other hand, was fired up by the results and looking to fund-raise. The Democratic challenger wrote, “BREAKING: The Des Moines Register Iowa Poll has us UP three points on Joni Ernst. Our grassroots campaign is working. But this poll is still within the margin of error. We’ve got more work to do.”
