The GOP knows that they need Donald Trump’s help during the 2022 midterms. The former president is wildly popular in some regions of the country. But Trump is also going to do what is beneficial to him. He could care less about the health of the GOP.
So while party leadership can make suggestions to Trump, he’s going to do what he wants. This was the case with his recent endorsement of Mary Miller. The GOP has asked that he back long-time Republican Congressman Rodney Davis.
Due to gerrymandering, freshman Rep. Miller loses her district and challenges Davis in Illinois 15. Miller is most well known for saying in January of 2021, “Each generation has the responsibility to teach and train the next generation. You know, if we win a few elections, we’re still going to be losing unless we win the hearts and minds of our children. This is the battle. Hitler was right on one thing: he said, ‘Whoever has the youth has the future.'”

Trump decided to back Miller after being heavily lobbied to do so by Marjorie Taylor Greene. While Davis has campaigned for Trump, he voted to certify the election and back a bi-partisan look into January 6th.
