Donald Trump put Republican lawmakers between a rock and a hard place. The former president is very popular with right wing voters. And his approval or disapproval could be the difference between getting elected to office and doing something else.
At the same time, Trump is a scoundrel and a liar. And in order to gain his approval, lawmakers have to debase themselves and go along with the lies.
These Republicans are abetted in their appeasement by almost all of the anchors of Fox News. Only one, Chris Wallace, is willing to call them out. The anchor explained why during a Wednesday appearance on Stephen Colbert’s show.
The host asked, “Does it worry you that you give legitimacy to people who have abdicated all public responsibility?”
Wallace explained, “There are plenty of people who were the leaders in the Congress of challenging [the election] that I just have not had on the show ever since then, and have purposefully not had on the show, because I don’t frankly wanna hear their crap. But having said that, there are some leaders that you have to ask them questions. There are people in leadership and the Senate and I won’t let them come on without putting them through the wringer.”
