‘I Didn’t Win the Election’: Trump Makes Stunning Admission During Interview With Historians

Donald Trump admitted that he didn’t win the 2020 Presidential election during a video interview with a panel of historians convened by Julian Zelizer, a Princeton professor.

The editor of The Presidency of Donald Trump: A First Historical Assessment, Zelizer recalled the meandering conversation in a new piece published by The Atlantic on Monday.

Zelizer writes that during the rambling hour they were on a Zoom conference, Trump disputed the facts of the January 6th Capitol attack, saying the “real story has yet to be written.” When Congress met to certify the Electoral College results, Trump told us, there had been a “peaceful rally,” more than a “million people” who were full of “tremendous love” and believed the election was “rigged” and “robbed” and “stolen.” He made a “very modest” and “very peaceful” speech, a “presidential speech.” The throng at the Capitol was a “massive” and “tremendous” group of people. The day was marred by a small group of left-wing Antifa and Black Lives Matter activists who “infiltrated” them and who were not stopped, because of poor decisions by the U.S. Capitol Police when some “bad things happened.”

But the biggest moment came after Trump complained the 2020 Presidential election was “stolen from him.” Trump said, “when I didn’t win the election” almost as a throwaway in the middle of the conversation. “During our hour together, Trump didn’t have many questions for us,” Zelizer writes. “Even in his attempt to correct the record, Trump mostly didn’t acknowledge or engage with informed outside criticisms of his presidency. He did, however, admit to having sometimes retweeted people he shouldn’t have, and at one point he said, “when I didn’t win the election”—phrasing at odds with his false claim that the 2020 vote was stolen.
