House Democrats are among those who are unhappy with the use of federal officers in Portland by the Trump administration. Many have blasted Trump for using the unidentified officers to squash the unrest in the city of Portland. It has been reported that the officers have pulled protesters off of the streets and placed them in unmarked vehicles under arrest. On Sunday, Democrats wrote a letter to the Inspector General of both, Department of Homeland security and The Department of Justice.
DOJ Inspector General Michael Horowitz and DHS Inspector General Joseph Cuffari received a leader from Jerry Nadler of the Judiciary Committee; Bennie Thompson of Homeland Security; and Carolyn Maloney of Oversight. In part, the Democrats wrote, “increasingly abused emergency authorities to justify the use of force against Americans exercising their right to peaceful assembly.” President Trump’s response to the unrest has been criticized by many who see him as an authoritarian leader rather than a president.
Trump has expressed his dislike for the protests every since they started after the police killing of George Floyd back in May. Protests have mostly been peaceful with some spots of violence but most protesters point out that the violence is often started by agents of the government as the police. There have been some to voice support for Trump’s actions, such as Pam Bondi, former Attorney General of Florida.
As protests continue it is unclear how things will be resolved as protesters in Portland do not seem to be giving up. We will see how long the fight will last.
