Greta Thunberg Joins Climate Protest In Front Of White House

Greta Thunberg, a 16-year-old Swedish climate activist who arrived in the U.S. earlier this summer (by boat, to avoid a larger carbon footprint), arrived at the White House Friday afternoon to take part in a protest highlighting the growing climate crisis.

Hundreds of young people gathered across the street from the White House, many holding signs that read “People or Profit” and “This is a crisis: act like it,” Reuters reported.

Thunberg joined the activists gathered there, as part of a multi-day presence in the U.S. She took part in an 11-minute “die in” as well, as activists laid down on the ground for that amount of time, symbolic of the number of years some scientists have suggested we have left before irreversible damage from the effects of climate change can be prevented, according to a UN report.

Thunberg has more events planned during her time in America, The Guardian reported. On Wednesday, she has plans to speak before Congress, to discuss the issue of climate change and the importance of the United States to take the issue seriously.

On Friday, she also plans to take part in a global strike on climate change. Millions are expected to attend the protests, especially young people, from around the world.

Some schools, including those in New York city, are anticipating large walk-outs from their students, and so have stated ahead of the event that students would be excused from classes, if they had parental permission to do so, Common Dreams reported.

Thunberg knows that some of her protests won’t be taken seriously, particularly by the White House or by President Donald Trump. She doesn’t plan any action that would have her talk to the president, she said in an interview last month.

“Why should I waste time talking to him when he, of course, is not going to listen to me? I can’t say anything that he hasn’t already heard,” Thunberg explained, according to a report from HuffPost.
