Graham Blames Pelosi For Capitol Security Failure

Republican South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham believes that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) is responsible for the massive security failure that enabled the Donald Trump-incited domestic terrorist mob to invade the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6 as the full Congress was meeting to certify the Electoral College vote in favor of President-elect Joe Biden.

In an appearance on the Fox News “Sunday Morning Futures” show, Graham decried “Stop the Steal” rioters whose belief in election fraud he helped stoke since the Nov. 3 election. “To see people come take over the Capitol, the House and the Senate, beat officers and defile the seat of government – how the hell could that happen? Where was Nancy Pelosi? It’s her job to provide Capitol security. We’ll get to the bottom of that.”

Graham’s assertion that Pelosi bears some culpability for the lack of protection that resulted in the crowd breeching the Capitol is baseless. It’s been well-documented that the FBI gave advance warning to Capitol security leadership that Trump supporters were planning to storm the Capitol in an attempt to disrupt the election certification ceremony, but security reinforcements were never requested.

As a result, Paul D. Irving, the House sergeant-at arms, Michael C. Stenger, the Senate sergeant-at-arms, and Steven Sund, chief of the Capitol Police, all have resigned.

Graham also used his appearance to both offer praise and advice to Trump, who is regular viewer of the program. “Mr. President your policies will stand the test of time, you’re the most important figure in the Republican party, you can shape the direction of the party, keep your movement alive.”

He also said it would be wrong for rioters to seek a pardon for their actions. “I think it would destroy President Trump and I hope they don’t go down that road,” Graham said. Already, however, a number of rioters who have been arrested and charged with federal crimes for their roles in the insurrection have appealed to Trump for pardons.
