GOP Senate Candidate Physically Abused Wife & Kids, Court Documents Allege

Court documents filed to modify a child custody agreement indicate that U.S. Senate candidate Eric Greitens (R-MO) engaged in physical abuse of his then-wife, Sheena Greitens, and his children, along with threatening to kill himself if she failed to comply with demands to make public displays of political support for him.

The Washington Post reports that Sheena Greitens filed documents in court in July, seeking a custody modification. In documents added to the case this week, she makes a long list of allegations, including that Eric Greitens knocked her down and took her phone and keys from her, later excusing the action as one taken to prevent her from harming his political career, that he threatened suicide if she didn’t carry out his requirements to support him publicly, and that he hit and otherwise physically abused their children.

When she tried to leave, she says he threatened to use his political power to have her stopped, and have the children taken from her.

In 2018, NPR reported on Greitens’ previous scandal, when he was accused of blackmailing a woman with whom he had been carrying on an affair. A recording revealed him speaking to the woman’s husband, threatening to release compromising photos of her if she revealed their relationship.

Despite the evidence, Greitens denied wrongdoing, indicating that he saw the matter as an attack on him, rather than as consequences for his behavior, although he did end up resigning as Governor over it. As a result of the investigation, he was charged with felony invasion of privacy, though the charge was later dropped, and with an unrelated charge for computer data tampering, as it was uncovered that he had allegedly illegally used a charity donor list for campaign fundraising. That charge was also dropped later.
