GOP Rep Wants Congress To Dissolve FBI & DOJ Over January 6th Investigation

Republicans are staging an all-out attack on the FBI and the Department of Justice. Donald Trump, during his presidency, attacked the Federal agencies for investigating Russian interference in the 2016 elections. Now the GOP is carrying out a more widespread attack, as the FBI continues to investigate last January’s attack on Congress.

Ted Cruz and others have, without supporting evidence, accused the FBI of staging the attack, somehow tricking Donald Trump’s supporters into showing up in body armor and with weapons, breaching the Capitol, threatening the lives of elected officials including House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Vice President Mike Pence, assaulting police officers, and trying to overturn the election.

However, the January 6th Committee and Federal agencies continue to investigate who in Congress and the White House may have had a role in planning the attack — and quite a few Congressional Republicans seem determined to stop this investigation at any cost. Representative Matt Gaetz, for instance, announced he wants the GOP to stage a ‘takeover’ of the January 6th Committee. There have been allegations that some of the subpoenaed witnesses are dodging the demand to testify, in a hope of ‘running out the clock,’ stalling until Congress can be flipped, so that a GOP-run House can simply stop the investigation.

Representative Thomas Massie is taking it even further: he’s threatening that Congress (presumably only after midterms and if Republicans are successful in flipping the House and taking the Senate) could simply dissolve the FBI and DOJ altogether.

All of these measures the GOP is suggesting in order to shut down the investigation into the January 6th attack seem to hinge on an increase of Republican control in the midterm elections. In the meantime, Republicans are actively working to shut down President Biden’s efforts to protect voting rights.
