GOP Rep. Debbie Lesko: Undocumented Immigrants Shouldn’t Get Vaccines Even Though “They’re Good Workers”

Arizona, long a Republican stronghold, is fast on its way to becoming blue. The state went for Joe Biden in 2020 and Democrats Mark Kelly and Kyrsten Sinema have won the last two senate elections. Still, the Republicans who remain in the state are among the most anti-immigrant lawmakers in the country.

Res. 755 Impeaching Donald John Trump, President of the United States, for high crimes and misdemeanors on Capitol Hill on December 17, 2019 in Washington, DC. This certainly includes Trump mega-fan Debbie Lesko who serves the state’s 8th district. Lesko recently sponsored an amendment that would make it so undocumented immigrants would not be eligible to receive COVID vaccines until every American gets theirs first.

Defending the law, Lesko said, “I worked with people that are Hispanic, I mean, they’re very good workers. You know, we’re compassionate people, but for goodness’ sakes, we have to take care of American citizens or people that are here legally first.”

Of course, undocumented immigrants often work essential jobs. They are also among the most threatened workers in the country. But when asked about immigrants getting the vaccine before senior citizens, Lesko remarked, “I just think that’s totally wrong.”
