Once one of the key battleground states, Ohio has moved to the right over the last decade. That doesn’t mean that Democrats can’t win there. Sherrod Brown, skilled at connecting with working-class voters, easily won his 2018 reelection bid by nearly 7 points.
Tim Ryan is another Democrat in the state who does well with Ohio voters. He is looking to win the other Senate seat in the state. And according to some GOP insiders, his Republican opponent J.D. Vance is running a terrible campaign.
One major issue for Vance is that Ryan is crushing him in fundraising. Conservative radio host Ron Verb opined, “It’s a code red. I think he’s running the worst campaign that you could possibly run.”
GOP insiders are also worried that Vance is underestimating Ryan’s ability to connect with Republican voters. While Vance was raised in rural Ohio, he has spent the last number of years attending Yale and hobnobbing with venture capitalists. A GOP strategist told the Daily Beast:
“Tim Ryan is talking about kitchen-table issues, and J.D. Vance is out there going to f*cking CPAC in Israel. Republicans are like, ‘Are you out of your f*cking mind?’ This isn’t some fucking book tour, dude.”
The GOP was supposed to have an easy time winning the senate in 2022. Thanks to Donald Trump, however, Vance, Herschel Walker and Mehmet Oz are all foundering against superior Democratic opponents. Polls show Walker and Oz losing handily and Vance in a dead heat with Rya.
