GOP Governor Begs for Large COVID-19 Stimulus Package

Republican Governor Jim Justice of West Virginia has made an impassioned plea for a large COVID-19 economic stimulus package despite the objections of the Mountain State’s Democratic United States Senator, Joe Manchin.

“Well, first and foremost, I wish that we’d all come together, and that’s not just blowing smoke, that’s just, cause I don’t do that,” Justice said in an interview with CNN’s Poppy Harlow on Monday. “But the other flip side of it is this, is Poppy, that we’ve got a lot of people in West Virginia that are still struggling with paying their power bill cause they got laid off because this pandemic just swept their jobs away from ’em.”

Justice said that now is not the time for the federal government to pinch pennies:

At the end of the day, what we need to do, is we need to understand that trying to be per se fiscally responsible at this point in time with what we’ve got going on in this country if we actually throw away some money right now, so what? We have really got to move and get people taken care of and get people back on balance.

Justice added that he is willing to work with President Joe Biden’s administration, “just like I worked with” former President Donald Trump’s, so that residents of West Virginia, one of the poorest states in the nation, can get the help they need.

“I want us to move forward,” the governor said.

Harlow then asked Justice if he has spoken to Manchin about his opposition to Biden’s $1.9 trillion dollar proposal.

Justice gave an emotional reply:

I have not talked directly to Joe about that and everything. I don’t really, you know, I don’t know exactly what the thinking could possibly be there. I mean, we’ve got people who are really hurting. I mean, that’s just all there is to it, and on top of that, here’s a perfect example, Poppy. My executive assistant came in the other day and said, ‘not far from my home, there was an elderly man that froze to death in his house,’ and everything. Probably couldn’t afford to pay the power bill. You know, I mean, there’s so many different things where people are really really hurting. And today, we’ve got to move. We can’t hold back. We gotta move.
