GOP Gov. Candidate David Perdue Wants to Create Election Police Force

For decades, the state of Georgia was a reliable Republican stronghold. The floodgates have slowly been breaking, though. Following Brian Kemp’s close, controversial win over Stacey Abrams in 2018, Joe Biden, Raphael Warnock, and Jon Ossoff all secured big Democratic victories.

Rather than trying to change their policies to appeal to more voters, Republicans are focused on claiming fraud. Of course, there was essentially no evidence of fraud in any of the elections won by Democrats.

David Perdue, who is trying to secure the GOP nomination for the 2022 election, has taken it a step further. The former senator says that if he wins, he would create an election police force.

CNN’s Dan Merica reported, “Perdue’s plan would create ‘an Election Law Enforcement Division in the State of Georgia’ that would ‘be charged with enforcing election laws, investigating election crimes and fraud, and arresting those who commit these offenses,’ according to a release from his campaign. Perdue’s plan also called for ‘election results to be independently audited before certification.”

The former senator also discussed his plan on Twitter, writing, “I’m proposing an Election Law Enforcement Division in Georgia to enforce election laws, investigate election crimes and fraud, and arrest those who commit these offenses. In addition, election results should be independently audited before certification.”

Perdue is a strange person to talk about the integrity of elections. Writer Greg Sargent noted, “The same guy who says he wouldn’t have certified the rightful winner of the 2020 presidential election pretends to care about election integrity.”
