GOP Congressman Refers to the Government Shutdown as ‘Idiotic’

Serving Illinois’ 16th District, Republican Adam Kinzinger has long been one of the more outspoken members of the House. In keeping with that theme, Kinzinger has come out with some of the strongest language against the government shutdown.

During an interview with CNN on Sunday, the congressman referred to the now 30 day long shutdown as idiotic. Kinzinger told host, Ana Cabrera:

“This is an idiotic shutdown. The American people deserve far better from those of us that are elected to represent 750,000 people—to be adults, to be grownups, to understand that we’re not going to get our way. This is to Republicans and Democrats by the way. And let’s just solve this. There are a lot of people hurting right now.”

Kinzinger largely absolved Trump of any blame for his role in the shutdown. He called Trump’s compromise offer a bold move and attacked Democrats for not taking it seriously. The congressman remarked, “For the Democrats to just reject it because there’s a barrier in there. Come back with a counter proposal that serious then.”

This argument obscures the fact that Trump created the DACA issue by cancelling the program in September of 2017. Chuck Schumer said of the latest proposal, “Offering some protections back in exchange for the wall is not a compromise but more hostage taking.”

With Trump’s proposal falling flat, the shutdown will now extend into it’s second month. Both sides are dug in and seemingly unwilling to take the blame.
