Giuliani News Conference Star is a Convicted Sex Offender
At his news conference on Saturday where he baselessly alleged vote counting irregularities in Philadelphia, the first person Trump personal attorney Rudy Giuliani called to the microphone is a convicted sex offender who once was jailed under New Jersey’s Deadbeat Dad Law.
Standing in the parking lot of Four Season Total Landscaping and flanked by a sex shop and a crematorium, Giuliani shook hands with and introduced Daryl Brooks to the assembled media, saying, “My friend, briefly just tell us what happened to you and who you are.”
Brooks proceeded to describe how, as a GOP poll watcher, he had been kept too far away from vote counters to actually see how ballots were being tabulated. He provided no evidence of his claims.
Giuliani’s star witness has a decades-long criminal record in New Jersey. In 1998 he was convicted of fondling himself in front of two girls and served three years and eight months in prison. A warrant was issued for his arrest in 2008 for failure to make more than $70,000 in child support payments to three different women. And in 2010 he was arrested and charged with aggravated assault and making terroristic threats after an argument with his then-girlfriend.
Politico, which broke the story, spoke with New Jersey politicians who are familiar with Brooks. Brooks, who says he moved to Philadelphia three years ago, made a number of unsuccessful runs for elected office in the Garden State.
“I started watching it and all of a sudden I was like, ‘there’s New Jersey’s perennial candidate claiming to live in Philadelphia and Giuliani claiming him to be a poll watcher and Philadelphia resident,” Trenton Mayor Reed Gusciora said in a phone interview.
James Gee, chief of staff to U.S. Rep. Bonnie Watson Coleman (D-N.J.), also said he immediately recognized Brooks.
“Yeah, I know Daryl. It’s so fitting that he would be there,” Gee said.
