When announcing the killing of ISIS leader Abuk Bakr al-Baghdadi, Donald Trump gave extensive details on the way he died. The graphic comments from the President were unusual and some wondered if they may inspire violence from the Taliban.
And now, according to Pentagon head Mark Milley, those comments may not even have been true. While speaking with reporters today, the Joint Chiefs of Staff Chair General said he doesn’t know where Trump got that story from.
While speaking about the operation on Sunday, Trump said, “He died after running into a dead-end tunnel, whimpering, screaming and crying all the way.” He repeated those words later in the speech. “He died like a dog, he died like a coward, he was whimpering, screaming and crying,” Trump continued. “And frankly, I think it’s something that should be brought out.”
When Milley was asked about those comments today, he claimed he didn’t know where Trump got that story. “I know the President had planned to talk down to the unit and unit members, but I don’t know what the source of that was,” said the general. “But I assume it was talking directly to unit members.”
The Pentagon leader was then asked if he had heard the details in that way. “I have not talked to unit members, no, that’s correct,” he replied. “I’ve talked to the commanders and CENTCOM, but not down to the members.”
The White House has yet to respond to the comments from the Joint Chiefs of Staff Chair General.
