Gavin Newsom Has Made California A Vote By Mail State

This past Friday, California Governor, Gavin Newsom, signed an executive order that made California a vote by mail state. Citizens of the Golden State will now be able to mail in their ballots for the upcoming November elections. The order guarantees every registered voter in California will receive a ballot in the mail. In-person voting is not being replaced. This just gives voters another option.

Newsom said about the order, “Mail-in ballot is important but it’s not an exclusive substitute to physical locations,” He went on to say that efforts are being made to ensure, “the appropriate number of physical sites for people to vote as well.”

Secretary of State Alex Padilla called into the press conference to tout the fact that the executive order has made the Golden State the first in the Union to automatically mail ballots to its citizens. Padilla said, “I think that’s huge. There is no safer, physically distancing, healthier way to exercise your right to vote than from the safety and convenience of your own home.” He also said that the postage for the ballots will be prepaid.

Padilla went on to say, “We need people who are willing and able and healthy to help us out on Election Day and the early voting time period,”

Newsom said that if the deadline for setting the parameters for in-person voting, which is May 30, is not met another executive order may be necessary.

One vocal critic of voting by mail has been President Trump. Trump has called voting by mail a “corrupt practice” He contends that people will use the method to cheat.  Trump tweeted his dissatisfaction with the move. “So in California, the Democrats, who fought like crazy to get all mail-in only ballots, and succeeded, have just opened a voting booth in the most Democrat area in the State. They are trying to steal another election. It’s all rigged out there. These votes must not count. SCAM!” Trump tweeted.

With the pandemic still raging on, vote by mail seems inevitable. It seems to be something President Trump will just have to contend with.
