Gaetz Defended This Democrat When She Faced Scandal, But She Still Wants Him to Resign Over Allegations

When Katie Hill was going through a sex scandal in 2019, Matt Gaetz was the only Republican to stand up for her. Still, the former congresswoman says that even if some of the allegations against Gaetz are true, then he must resign.

Following a rough divorce, Hill became the victim of revenge porn when an ex-husband released photos of her without her consent. The California lawmaker left office after it was revealed that she had a relationship with a staffer.

While the GOP remains silent during a scandal involving one of their own, they jumped all over Hill’s case. Gaetz, however, came out to defend her. The two had formed an unlikely bond as two of the younger Reps in congress. Hill wrote about the matter in a recent op-ed for Vanity Fair.

Hill recalls, “Matt was the first member of Congress who publicly and unapologetically defended me, saying that while I might have made mistakes, I was a victim in this circumstance. At one of the darkest moments of my life, when I was feeling more alone than I ever had, Matt stood up for me—and that really mattered.”

The former congresswoman, though, says the current allegations against Gaetz need to be taking seriously. She writes:

“If, despite his denials, Matt Gaetz did have sex with a minor, if he did provide girls and young women with drugs and money and gifts in exchange for sex, if he did ask these girls and young women to recruit other women for the same purpose, and if he did show his colleagues images of nude women without their consent, he needs to be held responsible. Some of these actions are criminal and some of them should be. All are morally reprehensible and unacceptable for a lawmaker. If there is even a fraction of truth to these reports, he should resign immediately.”
