Former Republican National Committee chair Michael Steele on Sunday tore into President Donald Trump’s dedicated followers’ willingness to be “complicit in your own punking.”
“Donald Trump is speaking every night” at this week’s Republican National Committee in Charlotte, North Carolina, Steele said on AM Joy. “What do you think Donald Trump is going to say every night?”
“Can we stop pretending that this is going to be a Republican National Convention?” Steele asked.
“This is Donald Trump’s reality TV moment. This is going to be every night of heaps and googobs of praise like the last three years nothing bad happened, and COVID-19 is China’s fault; not anyone else’s, but China’s,” Steel continued, “and the fact that it spead the way it did was beacuse those governoers in blue states refused to listen to Donald Trump is what this is gonna be about.”
Recent research has found that the strain that sparked the American outbreak in March actually came from Europe. Nevertheless, Trump continues to call the pathogen the “China virus,” which many Americans find overtly racist.
Republicans, Steele said, “believe in something. We believe in something other than one man. We are about something other than one man, and we’re willing to speak to the country about something other than one man.”
Trump “is not now nor has he ever been a Republican. He is not now nor has he ever been a conservative,” Steele said. “All y’all want to play this little game that Donald Trump is like you, you’re stupid. You’re being played. You’re getting punked. But what’s so bad about it is you’re complicit in your own punking.”
