Former CPAC Chair: The Event has Become a Celebration of the Denial of Truth and Reality
Donald Trump led the Republican party to a devastating loss in 2020. With him as its head, the GOP lost both the Senate and the White House giving Democrats complete control. Rather than moving away from his unpopularity, Conservatives are leaning into it, making their CPAC conference a celebration of Trump.
Mickey Edwards is quite familiar with the conference. The former Oklahoma congressman was in charge of organizing the event for 5 years. But now, Edwards says, CPAC has devolved into a cult-like event only based on celebrating Trump.
Edwards left his long-time party in January following the insurrection on the Capitol. He told CNN’s Erin Burnett on Friday night:
“The Republican party really no longer stands for any kind of principles, conservative or otherwise,” Edwards told Burnett on Friday. The party seems now to be completely following the lead of one man wherever he goes, which is the definition of a cult. Now all that matters is ‘Trump is for this, we’re for this.’ And that includes denying truth, denying fact, denying reality. It’s such a disconnect from what’s really happened in the world.”
The former Republican continued, “You know, they’re no different than the people who flock to other totalitarian leaders in other countries. They’re no different than they are in Hungary, they’re no different than they used to be Germany. Whatever their great leader says, they do, and there’s no underpinning of fact, there’s no underpinning or concern about the norms of free democracy.”
“The people at CPAC are living in an alternate reality in which facts don’t matter, the Constitution doesn’t matter. They have no principle except whatever their leader says.”

Edwards finished, “Ronald Reagan could not get elected to anything by the people who were at that CPAC conference this year.”
