Florida Republicans Expose Matt Gaetz’s Disgraceful Attacks Against Revenge Porn Laws

Matt Gaetz reportedly fought so hard against revenge porn laws because he felt the recipients of the image should be able to do as they pleased with them.

Revenge porn is a situation where images or videos have been distributed without one partner’s consent. This typicall happens after relationships end badly. Over the last decade a number of states have attempted to pass laws punishing revenge porn.

Florida legislators tried to pass one of these laws at a state level back in 2014. But Gaetz used his position as a committee chair to prevent the bill from being voted on. A different version of the bill later passed in 2015 by a vote margin of 114-2. The two no votes belonged to Gaetz and his friend John Tobia.

While passed, the bill was significantly watered down. Former State Senator David Simmons (R) says, “We passed a less-than-adequate version [of the law] as a result of the fact that the House went home.”

Another Florida Republican, Tom Goodson, also remembered Gaetz’ extreme opposition to the passage of revenge porn laws. He told the Orlando Journal Sentinel, “Matt was absolutely against it. He thought the picture was his to do with what he wanted. He thought that any picture was his to use as he wanted to, as an expression of his rights.” Goodson later continued, “If you crossed him, he was after you.”

While in the House of Representatives, Gaetz continued to oppose bills meant to punish those accused of sexual misconduct. In 2017, the Florida congressman was the only no vote on an anti human-trafficking bill.
