FLA Gov. Some People “Are Going to do Whatever the Hell They Want To”
The COVID-19 crisis has put a spotlight on a number of the nation’s governors. Americans who aren’t very familiar with national politics have gotten to know names like Mike DeWine, Gretchen Whitmer and Jay Inslee. Andrew Cuomo, overseeing New York, just saw his approval rating rise to 87%.
Other governors are now in the spotlight due to their refusal to take strong measures on social distancing. Ths would include Texas’ Greg Abbot and Florida’s Ron DeSantis. DeSantis explained on Tuesday that he wouldn’t issue stay at home orders and that some people are going to do whatever they want.
The Florida governor, who is closely aligned with Donald Trump, said that he would focus this time on improving the states infrastructure.
DeSantis said that most of the cases were in the southern part of the state. “The numbers are pretty stark,” he said. “I think this thing was circulating during the Super Bowl. Now, Miami’s rate of cases is a lot higher than statewide.”
The governor was then asked about pictures circulating this weekend that showed crowded Florida beaches. He responded, “That’s just the reality that we’re dealing with. No matter what you do, you’re going to have a class of folks who are going to do whatever the hell they want to.”
DeSantis did say that he would reconsider stay at home orders if they were recommended by the White House Task Force. He told reporters, “If they do, that’s something that would carry a lot of weight with me.”
Florida @GovRonDeSantis said today that one reason why he has not issued a statewide order for people to stay home is that the White House task force has not recommended it:
"If they do, that's something that would carry a lot of weight with me.”
