There’s hopeful news regarding the Omicron variant. A study by South Africa’s National Institute for Communicable Diseases has suggested the Omicron variant might indeed have reduced severity, as previously supposed. Health officials are warning not to jump to conclusions, though, since such a large portion of the population has had a previous COVID-19 infection.

France has canceled an order for an antiviral drug from Merck after trial data disappointed, and hopes to replace the order with a competing product from Pfizer, which is currently offering as much as a 90% reduction in hospitalizations and deaths when used early in an infection.
