Five Minute News 1/10/22: Donald Trump Criminal Conspiracy Investigation, Bronx Apartment Fire, Sohail Ahmadi Located, Reunited With Family

Monday’s episode focuses on the investigation into Donald Trump’s role in the January 6th attack, including whether he could be liable for criminal conspiracy; an apartment block fire in the Bronx killing 19; and the return of a baby who was lost in Afghanistan, now restored to the arms of family.

Lawmakers, including Republicans, are warning that if evidence surfaces showing that Trump actively coordinated the attack on Congress, there is no immunity or protection that will spare him from criminal culpability. The House Select Committee running the investigation revealed on Saturday that they are honing in on the question of whether the former President led a criminal conspiracy when he made efforts to prevent Joe Biden from being confirmed as President-Elect.

In the Bronx, a malfunctioning space heater started a fire that became “New York’s deadliest blaze in three decades,” resulting in 19 deaths, including the deaths of 9 children. Others who escaped were given oxygen after leaving the building. Some residents say they initially ignored smoke alarms because false alarms were so common in the building. Many survivors were offered temporary shelter in a nearby school.

Infant Sohail Ahmadi, two months old when he was handed in desperation to a soldier over an airport wall in August during the American evacuation of Afghanistan has been located and reunited with family in Kabul. A taxi driver had found the child in the airport and taken him home to raise as his own. The infant has now been turned over to grandparents and other relatives, who hope to reunite him with his parents.
