First Lady Jill Biden Shares ‘Gifts From the Heart’ For 1st WH Christmas as Twitter Remember’s Melania’s ‘Red Wedding’

Dr. Jill Biden kicked off her first holiday season as First Lady by offering the country “Gifts From the Heart.”

FLOTUS wrote on social media that she chose the theme from being “Inspired by the acts of kindness and experiences that lifted our spirits this year, decorated rooms in the White House reflect the Gifts from the Heart that unite us all: faith, family, friendship, the arts, learning, nature, gratitude, service, community, peace, and unity,” Dr. Biden said.

Over 100 volunteers from the local area spent a week decorating the outside and inside of the White House with 41 Christmas trees, 6,000 feet of ribbon, and over 78,750 holiday lights.

Every room in the White House celebrates a different gift. In the East Colonnade and East Landing, doves and shooting stars adorn the hallways. The library is decorated with stacks of books and birds and butterflies created out of recycled newspaper; it represents the gift of learning. The Vermeil Room is decorated with colorful paint swatches and paintbrushes, representing the gift of the visual arts.

There are decorations to honor the service of COVID-19 frontline workers and first responders. A Christmas tree in one room honors the military, “who have laid down their lives for our country, and the families who carry on their legacies.”

East Wing communications director Elizabeth Alexander said the idea for the First Lady’s theme was to showcase “things that unite and heal, and bring us together.” Dr. Biden and the East Wing began planning for the holiday decorations in early summer, narrowing the ideas and beginning to visualize how it would come to fruition.

Twitter users showed their gratitude to Dr. Biden, but they also couldn’t help but recall the Ghost of the Previous Administration and the dark themes Melania Trump often chose for her decor. Dr. Biden seemed to also get in on the fun, taking the Michelle Obama High Road by including the Former Occupants in an ornament.
