Sometimes as Americans we all feel a little bit helpless. While elections only take place annually, there are things that our politicians do which make us angry, yet, seemingly helpless. As the Trump administration continues a policy which separates families at our southern border, many Americans are experiencing that helpless feeling that I’m talking about. We can’t vote until November, which seems like an eternity from now (especially in the current timeline of mass political chaos we seem to be in), but we all want to do something to help these children.
I’ve put together a list of eight ways you can help fight back against Trump’s family separation policy, and you don’t even have to wait one second to do so:
1. Donate to 10 Groups Working to Protect These Families, All With One Click:
An ActBlue donation option has been set up, which will contribute equally to the following 10 groups, all seeking to fight against Trump’s current policy to separate families. The groups are:
- American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU)
- Asylum Seeker Advocacy Project
- Florence Immigrant and Refugee Rights Project
- Human Rights First
- Kids in Need of Defense (KIND)
- La Union del Pueblo Entero (LUPE)
- Refugee and Immigrant Center for Education and Legal Services (RAICES)
- United We Dream Action
- We Belong Together
- Womens Refugee Commission
There are also a number of other organizations which can use your help monetarily. Slate.com listed many of these.
2. Pledge to Take Part in the June 30th #FamiliesBelongTogether Protest in Washington D.C.
Check out the Facebook event page, where 30,000 people have already said that they are interested in this prtoest.
3. Write to Your Representatives
Let your representatives know why you are so upset. Let them know that if they want your future vote, they need to help make a change. You can also find direct contact details of the Senators and Representatives within southern border states here.
If you speak Spanish and have a legal background, you could be in great need, especially along our southern border. Check out the Texas Civil Rights Project and let them know you can help.
5. Write Your Local Newspapers, News Stations and Radio Shows
Tell them how angry this makes you, and how un-American these actions are. Believe it or not, they listen, and will adjust their coverage accordingly. The more media attention this issue gets, the more pressure we will put on the Trump administration and DHS.
6. Resist Online with the ResistBot
If you have any kind of social media following, every bit of online resisting helps. An awesome tool to use to streamline the process is something called the Resistbot. Remember, Russia tried to influence our elections by using social media. As Americans we should be the ones who are actually influencing our elections with social media!
7. Make Sure Your Friends and Family are Registered to Vote.
Even though November is still five months away, you can start making an impact right now. Have your friends and family check to see if they are registered to vote, and if they are not, then help them register. Every vote counts!
8. Speak up at Townhalls
Whether your district is blue or red, attend your local townhall meetings and voice your opinions loud and clear. Don’t be afraid to speak up early and often. If you don’t know if or when a local townhall is being held, use this tool to help.
If we work together, and all donate our time, energy and money, we can do what our politicians may refuse to. Now, let’s get started!
