Feeling Invincible From Looming Acquittal, Trump Could Revisit Hosting G-7 at Doral Golf Club

While some Republicans were willing to admit Trump had done wrong on his Ukraine call, only two were willing to call for impeachment witnesses. To the President, this signals a big win for him and the kind of thing that could push his decision making going forward.

There were very few times in the past 3 years where GOP lawmakers were willing to tell the President he was making a bad decision. One of these times was when he was advised to not hold the G-7 summit at his own golf club. According to a new report from Axios, Trump could be rethinking this decision thanks to the feeling of invincibility created by his upcoming acquittal.

In October of 2019, a perturbed Trump announced his Doral club would be taken out of consideration for the international summit. He tweeted at the time, “Based on both Media & Democrat Crazed and Irrational Hostility, we will no longer consider Trump National Doral, Miami, as the Host Site for the G-7 in 2020. We will begin the search for another site, including the possibility of Camp David, immediately. Thank you!”

Axios reports that the President’s mood has changed thanks to the impeachment trial. Jonathan Swan writes, “This sense of invulnerability is why the White House thought it could get away with hosting a gathering of world leaders at Trump’s private club in Doral. Trump retracted the decision, but an aide told me he was reluctant as he thought his Doral decision was perfect.'”

The 2020 G-7 is currently scheduled to be held at Camp David.
