Federalist Society Member Latest Republican to Denounce Trump’s Election Threats

Republican lawmakers are publicly breaking with Donald Trump over his threats to move the Presidential election in November. Now a founding member of the Federalist Society has added his voice to theirs, and a prominent GOP activist has gone as far as to publicly state that he’s voting for Joe Biden.

Steven Calabresi has written a scathing Op-Ed in the New York Times, publicly admonishing Trump for even suggesting moving the election. “I am frankly appalled by the president’s recent tweet seeking to postpone the November election,” Calabresi writes. “Until recently, I had taken as political hyperbole the Democrats’ assertion that President Trump is a fascist,” he continues. “But this latest tweet is fascistic and is itself grounds for the president’s immediate impeachment again by the House of Representatives and his removal from office by the Senate.”

It seems the floodgates have opened as more Republicans feel comfortable speaking out in public against Trump. Avery Pereira, a lifelong Republican and community activist from Brooklyn, New York, tweeted his support for Joe Biden. “Tonight, as a lifelong Republican, I formally announce my support for JoeBiden for president,” Pereira tweeted. “We cannot afford four more years of indecency, incompetence, and immorality from this administration. Let us work together as patriots to get out the vote and put #CountryOverParty”

During his Thursday press conference, Trump claimed that he does not want to see the election delayed, regardless of the coronavirus pandemic, but also does not “want to have to wait for three months and then find out that the ballots are all missing and the election doesn’t mean anything.” It should be noted that there is no evidence to his claims that voting by mail will lead to widespread fraud.

The influential Calabresi has called on every Congressional Republican to tell Trump he cannot postpone the election, and added that those who say otherwise “should never be elected to Congress again.”
